Embedded within the Anushasana Parva of the epic Mahabharata, this dialogue unfolds on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Here, the grandsire Bhishma, lying on his bed of arrows, imparts the ultimate tools for liberation to King Yudhisthira. When asked who the supreme refuge is and by what praise a human can attain peace, Bhishma reveals the thousand names of the Supreme Being, Bhagawan Narayana.

While the core thousand names constitute the heart of this spiritual discipline, the verses that immediately follow the hymn hold a deeply profound significance of their own. This concluding segment is known as the Phalashruthi—literally translating to "hearing the fruits or results" of the chanting.

Far from being a mere list of material rewards or a rhetorical sign-off, the Phalashruthi is an essential, foundational component of the text. It serves as an authoritative "curtain raiser," setting the stage for a seeker to understand the real-world potency, psychological impact, and spiritual majesty of the text.

• Vimucyeta Sankatath (Deliverance from Crisis): The psychological resilience to navigate seemingly inescapable, high-stress life dilemmas.

For the advanced spiritual seeker, the rewards of the Phalashruthi shift from earthly benefits to the ultimate treasures of consciousness:

• Vasudevatmakam Sarvam: A profound realization that the entire universe is enveloped, sustained, and permeated by Lord Vasudeva.

• Bhakti and Jnana: The ignition of intense, unmotivated devotion coupled with the precise intellectual realization of the nature of God, the soul, and matter.

• Moksha Pradhana: The gradual burning away of past karmic imprints, culminating in the soul escaping the cycle of birth and death to reach its natural, blissful state in Vaikuntha.

Approach the Lord with an understanding of His absolute supremacy (Hari Sarvottama). When we chant the Vishnu Sahasranama in its entirety, we are not just seeking a quick fix for a planetary transition; we are immersing our entire being into an infinite ocean of auspicious attributes.

Let us approach this sacred text with pure devotion, chanting it fully and consistently. In doing so, we allow the universal promises of the Phalashruthi to naturally manifest in our lives—bringing peace to the mind, harmony to the body, and ultimate liberation to the soul.
