Unlocking the Vishnu Sahasranama: A Vedic Perspective
I’m excited to
share this unique exploration of the Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Bhashya.
While widely loved as a devotional hymn, this document uncovers its esoteric
structural foundation: the Brihatee Sahasram.
The Vishnu
Sahasranama is the rare, final teaching from the Anushasana Parva of
the Mahabharata, delivered by Bhishmacharya to Dharmaraya (Yudhisthira).
Maharishi Vyasa gifted these thousand names to us in the form of a hymn
(stotra). Each name of the Lord is an adjectival attribute describing His
divine qualities, unlike human names which serve as mere identifiers. While
other Sahasranamas exist, the Vishnu Sahasranama remains the most
renowned due to its extensive commentaries by monumental scholars.
Beyond the
familiar verses lies a profound inner core. This PDF reveals how the hymn is
intricately woven with the Brihatee Sahasram—a perspective rarely
discussed in mainstream circles. While commonly known as a Stotra, it holds the
essence of the Brihati Sahasra, a collection of 1,000 Vedic mantras
(Riks) found in the Aitareya Upanishad.
Inside this
guide:
- The 36-Letter Secret: Why the "Brihatee" meter is the Lord’s favorite and how it acts as Amruta Anna (Divine Food).
- The Bio-Link: How the 1,000 names correspond to the 72,000 nadis (energy channels) to optimize the body's vital flow.
- Infinite Meaning:
How Sri Madhvacharya proved that every single name carries at least 100
distinct meanings.
Chanting the Vishnu
Sahasranama is an act of Anusandhana (constant contemplation)
specifically directed toward Paramatma Vishnu. This study is not just
intellectual, but a source of eternal strength and protection for the body and
soul.
विश्वेश्वरमजं देवं जगतः प्रभुमव्ययम् ।
भजन्ति ये पुष्कराक्षं न ते यान्ति पराभवम् ॥
Vishveshvaramajam
Devam Jagatah Prabhumavyayam |
Bhajanti Ye Pushkaraksham Na Te Yanti Parabhavam ||
Meaning: "Those who worship the lotus-eyed Lord of the
universe—the unborn, inexhaustible Master—shall never meet with defeat or
downfall."
Whether you
are a long-time practitioner or a curious seeker, this overview provides a
concise and illuminating look at why this Sahasranama is the crown jewel of the
Mahabharata.
